Your Questions About Cause Of Tinnitus In One Ear

Thomas asks…

help! i woke up deaf in one ear 7 mornings ago!?

I woke up monday morning not being able to hear out of my right ear. I went to the doctor at (naval doctor who doesnt know crap and didnt even give me a hearing test) she said there is no infection and no liquid in behind my ear drum. She sent me out of there with sudafed for the “full feeling”. Its not sunday and my hearing has not come back at all. Im not sick, no cold, no pain. I saw on the internet something about SSHL and it scared me so i switched my insurance to out in town so i dont have to see the naval docs who are lost in the sauce! now im waiting on it to go through so i can schedule an appointment. has this happened to anyone? what is happening? will i get my hearing back?? i am only 21, and have no health problems! i have been taking an antibiotic (minocin) for years now for acne purposes. i also read some antibiotics can cause tinnitus (ringing in the ears), so i wonder if its from the long usage of the antibiotic!?! someone help!
yes, i have ringing in my ears, but no pain.

Brian answers:

The differential diagnosis includes a stroke to the cochlear nerve. Unfortuately this is permanent.
I presume you can not hear at all.
Other possibilties includes an acoustic neuroma but thisis gradual hearing loss. Inner ear pathology may cause -partial hearing loss.

You need a MRI of the brain to look for other strokes, demyelinating disease or Susac syndrome

James asks…

i have a condition called menieres (not sure of the spelling) syndromee?

it affects the ear causing balance problems, tinnitus and deafness, i have had it for about 14 years, what i want to know is , i am going on a long haul flight soon and i am a bit worried that the pressure will affect my ears even more than the usual, the condition only affects my one ear, the other one is ok (although i have tinnitus in both ears) I am concerned that it might make my condition worse.

Brian answers:

I don”t have the disease myself but have a friend who does, he also has tinnatis. He was invalided out of the services with it. But he now lives in the Caribbean and travels back to UK about 3 to 4 times a year. He has never metioned that it”s been a problem for him. He also scuba dives too. It”s worth doing a little research for your own peace of mind then go for it.Enjoy.

Can waking-up one morning with a bad Kink in the Left-Neck area…somehow cause Ringing in the Left Ear”?

I am seriously doubting I have *Tinnitus*.

Because, (before) I woke-up with a King in my Neck, my Left Ear was perfectly fine last Fall of 2009. I had –> No Ringing.
But right after my Kink.in my Neck, my Left Ear started to Hiss and Buzz.

Any Doctors in the house ?? ;-)

Brian answers:

I can”t tell you if the one causes the other but you will know after you release the muscles in your neck which causes the kinks to happen. Once they are done you will know if the ringing in the ears is still there or not. Here is how to release the muscles in your neck:
Neck
Put your hands alongside your head so your thumbs are on the front of the muscle under your ear and your fingers are on the back of the muscle behind your head. Squeeze your thumb and fingers together and hold. Relax your body. After 45 seconds, slowly lower your head as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your neck lowered for another 30 seconds.
With your neck in the lowered position, replace your thumbs in under the ears and your fingers behind your head but right next to your skull this time. Press your fingers and thumbs together again and hold. Relax your body while waiting. When the muscles have all released, slowly lift your head until it’s level again, release the pressure but hold your head like that for another 30 seconds.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

Can I become an Air Force Pilot with Tinnitus?

Im 15 and I”ve been wanting to be a pilot in the air force since I was like 4. My whole family has been in the military, and now its my turn (which is not a burdon I do not wan”t, I am dying to join the Air Force.) Anyways, One of my friends (about 3-4 months ago) slapped me across the head, and my ear has been ringing since. I went to a doctor like a week after, they said I had tinnitus. I haven”t been to a specialist yet, im going soon. I was wondering if I can still be a pilot in the Air Force if I have Tinnitus (left ear only). I plan on going to the Air Force Academy if I am Good Enough, and being a pilot is the only thing for me. I don”t see how something like a slap on the ear can impair my ability to do something, for life. Any response would be helpful. Pretty worried here. If you know any ways to end PHYSICALLY CAUSED tinnitus, please tel me. Im willing to do anything, and I”m not giving up on my dream.

Brian answers:

I had to look up Tinnitus and I do not know the proper Air Force reg that would lay out eligability but here is my take. First of all, is there any hearing loss? If you are still able to pass hearing tests despite this ringing then I would think that it is not an issue. What I read also stated that there are different levels from “slight” to “catastrophic” if you are in the slight range then you might have nothing to worry about and even if it does somewhat effect your hearing then it might be waiverable. Anything above slight and if it effects your hearing tests I would guess that it would be disqualifying from flying. A lot of things that you might not even think about can disqualify you, I know guys who got through a majority of the Academy and then in the last year or two the docs found something random to disqualify them. You can talk to the specialists and see if it can be fixed or whatever, but before you do anything serious I would call an Air Force Hospital and ask to talk to a Flight Surgeon. They”ll know all the regs about different disqualifying items which could also include any sorts of surgery or medication to fix a problem so don”t jump at the first solution a doc offers as it might not improve your situation in the long run. Good Luck
