<p>Microtia is an ear deformity that many people do not know much about. Parents often learn about this birth defect for the first time when their child is developing. Parents will be very worried when their child is born with Microtia because they may not understand it. Microtia is an ear deformity that can be treated. In every case of Microtia, the treatment plan is different. This is why parents should find a skilled doctor to treat the condition. One with knowledge and experience would be the best for your child.
Are you wondering what Microtia is?
Microtia is a common birth defect where the ears are deformed. The exterior ear is not shaped properly and sometimes even the inner ear is not developed fully causing hearing loss or total deafness. Some cases Microtia is on both ears, and others only one. However, it is more likely to be in only one ear and not both. Only about 10% of children with Microtia have it in both ears. This is good for those that suffer from severe Microtia and have total hearing loss. At least they will always be able to hear out of one ear if the Microtia caused them to go deaf in the ear that is affected.
In some cases of Microtia, the child is not born with an ear canal at all. It is called aural atresia. It is common for children to have aural atresia when they have Microtia. This means that the patient will not have hearing in the ear without the ear canal since it is what allows the ear to work properly. When a patient has Microtia in both ears, he/she may be aloud to hear depending on the severity of the condition. Many children can hear just fine with hearing aids in place.
It is common for children, born with Microtia, to have major ear deformities in their inner ear. They could be born without an eardrum or the middle ear not formed properly. Those are both needed to be able to hear. That is why so many patients with Microtia suffer from hearing loss or are deaf.
So how is Microtia treated?
Every case of Microtia is different. Some are more severe than others. Some children can hear and others cannot. Depending on the individual case, there will be treatments done on the ear(s). Some children are embarrassed of their Microtia and choose to have reconstructive ear surgery and others function just fine. Parents of children with Microtia need to meet with doctors and plastic surgeons to see which treatments are best for their child. Some children are able to hear again after receiving reconstructive ear surgery, and they can live a normal life. Unfortunately in more severe cases, the hearing never comes back and the child will have to live the rest of their life with Microtia and no hearing.
If you or your child has Microtia take the time to research the different treatment options. Meet with doctors and surgeons to find out every possible step to take to treat the Microtia.
