Ear Deformity Treatment
<p>Microtia is more common in baby boys than in baby girls why the ear deformity is more of a common birth defect for boys in unknown. Microtia is also genetic, if it runs in your family your children are more susceptible to having Microtia than a child that has no genetic traits of Microtia. While Microtia can be genetic it has also been linked to some doctor prescribed acne medicine, always check with your obstetrician gynecologist while pregnant to be sure what medicines are okay to take while pregnant; so that you don’t risk giving your children a higher birth defect risk.
Microtia can be both bilateral or unilateral which means bi- both and uni- one. Unilateral is more common as is having Microtia only in the right ear. So the most common form of Microtia is in the right ear, unilateral, and with boys. While Microtia is treatable not all children are the perfect candidate for ear reshaping. Microtia does affect hearing in children and for most children with the birth defect, hearing loss is a big issue. For some children getting an cochlear implant can help with the hearing loss but not all children can receive the surgery, some children can have hearing aids to help for hearing loss that is not so severe.
External ear surgery can also be done for candidates over the age of seven when the ear would be closer to the size of an adult ear. There are three reconstruction surgery options for treatment of Microtia: Rib Cartilage Graft Reconstruction, Reconstruct the ear using a polyethylene plastic implant and Ear Prosthesis. For rib cartilage surgery for the external ear the reconstruction surgeon takes rib cartilage to form an ear, this does not help hearing at all but it makes the patient have an ear. The second takes a plastic ear implant and the third is prosthetic. They all have advantages and disadvantages but don’t help with hearing loss for those hearing aids or cochlear implants are needed.
Microtia is a birth defect but shouldn’t be looked at as one that cripples the child, they still have their health and treatments are available, while there is no treatment that 100% cures the ear deformity there are things available to make life simpler for the children born with the ear deformity. Microtia is hard for some children when it comes to teasing and children are mean but it isn’t a birth defect that effects the child in anyway cognitively. There are ways to help with hearing and appearance and Microtia is treatable.
